As a class, the NNRTIs are heterogeneous with respect to chemical structure. NNRTIs bind noncompetitively to the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme, causing a disruption in the enzyme's catalytic site. In contrast, the nucleoside analogues (such as zidovudine, AZT) compete directly with cellular nucleosides at the active site.
