Apple desperately hoping that its new iOS 5 will be exactly what it takes to bring down the new ambitious Android OS from Google the Ice Cream Sandwich. It is known by now that the famous iPhones have taken a direct hit from some of the new, high tech Android Operating smartphones on the market. For example, in the US, Google Android held a market share of 36.4%, while Apple dropped to 26%, barely managing to remain ahead of RIMM who held 25.7% of the market share. Android’s steady rise was obvious as it held 26% in November 2010, grew to 31.2% in January and finally reached 36.4% by the end of May 2011. At this rate, Android looks powerful enough to hold 50% of the market share by the end of the year.
Moreover, in terms of mobile sales in the US, Apple only managed a 4th place with 8.3% sales, being beaten by Samsung with 24.5 percent, LG with 21 percent and Motorola with 15.6 percent. In addition a report stated that despite the fact that the Apple Store has twice as many applications as the Android Market, users Android users download more apps than iPhone users.
Just when things looked pretty grey for Apple, the company was served another blow by Android who revealed is new OS the Ice Cream Sandwich at the annual I/O 2011 event. This new operating system plans to take the best from both the smartphone and tablet Android Operating Systems and blend it in a new one, thus playing on the same level as Apple whose iOS runs both on the iPhone and the iPad.
This new OS will prove to be a blessing for developers who have until now been forced to develop application for the fragmented Android market. |
