A Whiff of Panic
Things are happening so fast now that anything written about the happenings in and around Greece becomes quickly outdated again. Inter alia, it now seems that the Greek government is about to fall on its sword - or maybe not. In any event, it appears as though things are finally spinning out of control. There is a panic spike underway in perpheral government bond yields and CDS prices and the US stock market is dangerously poised just above a very important level of support. Almost undetected below the hoopla over Greece, Spanish house prices suffer an accelerated collapse and Spain's government bond yields spike to a fresh 11 year high. If these yields make a decisive breakout (so far it is just a tiny peek above the previous high), it will be all over but the shouting.
One eurocrat notes that there is a 'profound sense of foreboding' as negotiations over how to proceed with the Greek bailout once again fail. This seems very much justified.
