It is not the lack of guns in Mexico that is the problem. My experience was that anyone who wanted a gun, had one. All mostly illegal.
The problem is that the cartels have very good guns and plenty of them. Only the military can go against well trained gunmen sporting M 16s, AK 47s, grenade launchers, Barrett 50 cal. rifles, etc., riding around in armored SUVs while enjoying police and political protection.
Law abiding citizens, no matter how well armed, do not stand a chance.
The way to beat the cartels, sadly, is two fold. First, go after their money. Second, take the profits out of the trade through legalization. Let people decide for themselves if they want to ruin their lives, but provide no social programs to help out the idiots who decide to screw up so that the choice to do drugs has serious consequences.
This way of dealing with things would work. Save tons of taxpayer money as a huge and useless bureaucracy could be dismantled.
