"You definitely can plant some nice plots on reclaimed strip mine ground it just takes some work and time. Most of my plots are on reclaimed strip mine ground and I've successfully planted rye, clover, brassicas, soybeans, lablab, buckwheat and sunflowers. Here's what I do when I start a new field which I will plant starting in the fall.

1. Get a soil test.
2. Mow if necessary in early spring.
3. Spray with glyphosate(roundup) in early to mid May.
4. Wait about a month and spray again.
5. Beginning of August spray again OR disk/plow lime into the ground per soil test if necessary.
6. Around Labor Day plant rye GRAIN.

Rye grain is idiot proof b/c it will grow anywhere, doesn't require expensive fertilizers, the deer love it and it builds the soil which I'm sure you'll have to do. Waiting till fall to plant allows you to get control of your weeds. It's not just what is already growing but the soil has a seed bank that is just waiting to explode once you kill off the existing vegetation.

Year 2 I would repeat the spraying routine above and take another soil test in early spring and lime to it. IF the pH is around 6 I would plant brassicas in late July/early August. If my pH was still below 6 I'd plant rye again.

This field below didn't even grow much for weeds when I started. Had knee high brassicas this year and waist high soybeans in an exclusion cage the year before. It can be done!"
