They stop criminal activities, like price fixing, illegal trusts, money laundering, insider trading of securities... Companies are fundamentally corrupt, as money is the driver of the corruption. There is something to the saying that money is the root of all evil. The naivete of libertarians is that companies will behave well in the public interest (as well as their own) if only the govt. would get out of their way. That's wrong and naive. What rose coloured specs you guys wear. Again, transparent and accountable govt. is the cure for corruption.
