Nice reminder of professor Tyler , University of Edinburgh (1787) and his writing of those "stages of democracy"

( just about the same time our fathers were busy adopting the constitution )

* Good to read the preface too which am sure
many a good Chinese scholar has read too

permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until
the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from
the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for
the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury,
with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose
fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship."

Of course the Scottish Professor Tyler from Edinburgh was commenting on the fall of the Athenian Democracy 2000yrs earlier !
