To All: Overcapacity in the foundry biz???

TSMC to increase its sales estimate

HSINCHU, TAIWAN -- Following a surge in the IC wafer foundry
business, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) Ltd. here
this week will raise its 1997 sales forecast by 10% to 20%, according to
industry analysts.

Hsinchu's TSMC's 1997 sales could total between $1.54 billion to $1.68
billion, analysts estimated. Earlier this year, TSMC estimated its 1997 sales
would slip 12.5% to about $1.4 billion this year compared to $1.6 billion
in 1996.

Donald Floyd, an analyst for ING Barings Taiwan Ltd. in Taipei, said it
was no surprise that TSMC would revise its 1997 sales upwards following
strong bookings and sales in the third quarter of this year. TSMC itself is
showing gross margins of more than a whopping 40% at the present time,
while other chip businesses DRAMs remain in the tank, Floyd added.
