ASUS Tansformer closing in on iPad2

Asustek’s CEO Jerry Shen said the company will ship 300,000 ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Tablets in June alone. This likely tops all their competitors and is only next in line to the iPad 2.

Statistics provided by PC retailers show that suppliers have reduced their shipment goals, whereas the demand for the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer remains strong. The Transformer is a tablet that can dock into a full QWERTY keyboard and “transform” into a netbook.

Shen pointed out further that the company shipped 400,000 Transformer units in April and May, a figure that far exceeded their expectation of 300,000 systems for the second quarter.

He went on to say that the tablet will bring in $86.7-103 million, which accounts for nearly 10% of the company’s total revenue for June. He also estimated demand from European markets and mainland China would increase in the third quarter even though they have been weak in the second quarter.

The company is already working on a second generation ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, which it says will feature a slimmer design and quad-core CPU. The release date is scheduled for the fourth quarter, around the Christmas holiday season
