Speech Recognition System Cuts Costs, Adds Accuracy to Wal*Mart
Distribution Centers

AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- A voice-based order filling system that includes a wireless LAN and a built-in spread spectrum radio module from Telxon Corporation (Nasdaq: TLXN - news) has eliminated both mispicks and product labeling costs at Wal*Mart grocery distribution centers, the Akron, Ohio-based company said today.

The new system, which includes portable voice recognition Talkman(TM) terminals from Vocollect, Inc. of Pittsburgh, is now in use at two Wal*Mart facilities and is scheduled for operation in all of its grocery distribution centers.

With the new system, there are no paper lists and no labels to be affixed to the items. Instead, each order selector is equipped
with a microphone / speaker headset connected to a portable unit worn on a waistbelt. The entire unit weighs less than two pounds.

The order selectors are guided by voice to item locations in the warehouse. The system also verifies quantities picked and can
respond to a variety of requests from the order selector, such as describing the product, providing its U.P.C. code or repeating
the previous pick.

The Vocollect Talkman terminals include a built-in Telxon spread spectrum radio, which communicates over the company's wireless LAN.

Wal*Mart, a long-time Telxon customer, operates more than 3,000 stores domestically and internationally, and had sales of $104.9 billion in the fiscal year ending January 31, 1997. Telxon has more than 70,000 wireless devices installed in Wal*Mart's retail operations.

Vocollect is a privately-held company based in Pittsburgh, which designs, develops and markets voice transaction terminals for
warehousing and industrial inspection markets.
