I had offered the non-NYT approved story - specifically because this thread generally only posts a specific meme.

Energy independence would be best served by looking at all possibilities - not discounting any one of them for religious reasons. The push toward EV's is religious/political. The use of natural gas for just electricity is also political.

Because we have created an artificial market for electricity - we may have created a bubble - but that doesn't mean that shale gas is a bad idea.

Natural Gas as an automotive fuel is used extensively elsewhere. Use with fuel cells is new, but promising.

Even if we just lookk at electricity production - Natural Gas is much better than coal from a pollution perspective. Most importantly it can be used in conjunction with renewals such as wind to provide smooth base power requirements. Gas turbines can be on-demand sources.

But the 'no carbon' forces in the world make 'lower carbon' choices impossible.
