reclaimed mining areas tend to be very productive for wildlife. When the mining companies remove the overburden from the coal, they keep the layers separate and put them back in order so that the fecund soil is put back on top.

I've seen much more wildlife on reclaimed mine lands than I ever have in the wilderness.
