Acronis includes Track 0 and the MBR data in every image, no matter which volume it's copying.

When restoring a volume, you're given the choice of restoring Track 0 and MBR as well. You can also restore ONLY Track 0 and MBR.

The MBR is located at Sec 1, Cyl 0, Head 0. It stores the Master Boot Code, Disk Signature and Partition Table. The MBC and PT data are needed to proceed to the next step in booting. (Vista and Windows 7 check the Signature, while XP doesn't.)

The Master Boot Record code looks for the Active partition and uses the data stored in that partition's boot sector to start the system. A partition's boot code should (must) be included in it's backup images.

It's easy to confuse Master Boot Record and Boot Sectors. Think of the disk's MBR as Management and the partitions' Boot Sectors as Labour.

Cheers, PW.
