A base copy of XP is 10,011 files and is 1.7 GB in uncompressed form. You will also want to use Microsoft updates to keep it up to date, and you will also need AV and everything else a normal PC uses. The Microsoft update site will check that your version of XP is valid.

That 10,011 files number is before any updates or applications are loaded.

I recommend to obtain a genuine copy of XP and keep it. There are plenty of copies out there as people upgrade. There may be other legitimate ways of obtaining a copy that MS finds acceptable. See what else gets posted.
