On the subject of membership levels, here is what I am thinking:

Right now there is a dizzying array of membership levels. I would like to compress it to 3:

(0) Guest (not logged in)
(1) Registered (restricted posting/PMs, can't create new subjects)
(2) Premium (approved for unlimited posting...should we still call it Premium or is there a better name?)
(3) Tenured/Lifetime/Grandfathered.

Grandfathered accounts and anyone that has ever paid more than $50 or so is automatically in the highest category. Recurring payments will be halted. Note that this a reversal of treatment for Grandfathered vs. Premium. I hold Grandfathered accounts in the highest esteem and feel they never should have been charged for "Premium" services.

Again, everyone who has paid in the last 6 months who wants a refund will get one; I will give it to them no questions asked. If they were not previously Grandfathered, their account will be kept at Premium. Basically they won't lose any features, but they won't have the highest status either. And it's just a "status" symbol at this point, as there is no difference in features.

Tenured/Lifetime members will get free tshirts, and might have additional features in the distant future that are not available to Premium members. I'll try to think of kind of some additional perks, but suggestions are welcome.

SI Ron and I will endeavor to review all of the Registered accounts and upgrade anyone who is deserving to Premium status.

The main difference, perhaps the only one for the foreseeable future, between a Registered account and Premium is the level of posting/PM activity allowed. This will serve as bottleneck to new users getting into the site, and eventually we can continually tighten the size of the bottleneck to protect the community from rapid growth. I anticipate this might involve the re-introduction of a reasonable lifetime fee in a few years.

As for people who worry about losing features if they request a refund, please don't. (I am getting a lot of PMs from people requesting a refund but ONLY IF they won't lose features). Anyone using the site today and helping shape the future of the site will be treated well. As a community, we will selectively upgrade Premium users to Lifetime.
