Paris, -- ChinaTelecom , a leading Chinese fixed and mobile operator, has selectedAlcatel-Lucent (ALU) to deliver multimedia services tosubscribers in Shanghai, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Xinjiang and Sichuanprovinces. By converging different types of "media" -- voice, video, and otherdata services -- over a common IP platform, China Telecom will be able to bringa growing range of interesting and useful services to more than 120 millionconsumers and business users.
This contract, won by Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell -- Alcatel-Lucent'sflagship company in China -- is the first commercial deployment of IMS (IPMultimedia Subsystem) technology for China Telecom, and builds on a successfultrial in Shanghai and Shandong provinces. This project will play a significantrole in helping China Telecom evolve its network from its legacy system -- knownas a PSTN -- to an all-IP infrastructure that operates on the principles of theInternet, making it much easier and less costly to operate.
"This project with Alcatel-Lucent, our first large-scale commercialdeployment of IMS, is a critical step in our transformation to a much moreflexible, cost effective all-IP network," said XU Sui, Deputy General Managerof Network Development Dept.in China Telecom. "The world ofcommunications is moving to more video, more streamed content from the web,more personalized services -- we are building a network for this new world."
Already the country's biggest fixed network operator, China Telecom hasexperienced dramatic growth in its mobile business and is seeking to expand allof its services to all subscribers. Alcatel-Lucent's IMS Solution willenable China Telecom to unify communications across fixed, mobile and the web,as well as ensuring it remains secure. These capabilities include: voice,video-conferencing, multimedia ringback tones, IP Centrex, SIP Pushsystem, CDMAAnchoring, and terminal management.
In addition, China Telecom and Alcatel-Lucent will work together to developadvanced services, including unified network address book, presence, multimediainstant messaging (including SMS, text and video) and image sharing..
