I'm watching an interesting show on the History Channel - "How the States Got their Shapes." Just now - Montana and Idaho. It was all about gold. Congress set the western boundary of Montana to make sure that it included the gold mines at Bannack and elsewhere. One guy said about Bannack that it wasn't hard getting there, but it was hard getting out of there with your gold. I thought about you and the Magruder story.

I highly recommend the show. I learned, for example, how Michigan got the Upper Penninsula (it was a consolation prize after the territory lost the "Toledo Corridor" and the Lake Erie port there. As it worked out, Michigan got the better end of the deal, what with timber, copper and iron in the Yoop.
