It'd be much better for the young kids if one of the parents stays home and raises them, but our materialistic society is resistant to that in many ways. Its not just about money. Shannon likes her work. My friend likes his work. Why shouldn't they both work? Besides, they figured out that one of them staying home wasn't the answer......money wise. They would still have financial problems. Daycare is costly but its all the other things kids require.........food, clothing, accessories, education, etc....that break the bank. This runs into another problem that has been cited on this thread. The average worker in this country is not doing that well despite all the talk about how prosperous the US is. Both parents have to work to provide many of the things one parent could provide back in the middle of the 20th century. Its true we have more 'toys' but even for just the basics, many families require both parents working.
