Because people that don't follow polite discourse are often unbalanced and disrupt the thread to the point of lowering the quality of the content. They chase out the good posters. ......I might ask: Is the status quo a problem here? I mainly hang out on the Kitchen and it is a great thread IMO because of the civility and the enforcement of reasonable rules.

I believe that Brad is looking at what changes might make SI a better message board. Ultimately any decision to make changes are his. We are all posting our opinions, and I think that yours are certainly valid opinions, even if I disagree with them.

I've started one or two threads here on SI and some of them are moderated. My current thread has one person banned. But if I had the ability to ignore that person (and all messages posted to that person), then I wouldn't need to ban him. If everyone on the microcap kitchen agreed that a person was disruptive, all they have to do is agree that this guy needs to be cyber-shunned with everyone putting him on ignore. That way he is free to post whatever he wants...but nobody is obligated to listen.

Unless someone has a vested interest in not letting other people hear what someone has to say, I simply don't understand why this isn't the perfect solution.
