CA taking over Novell. Actually, this one makes more sense than any of the others I've heard...thanks for posting it! CA is the best company in the industry at making acquisitions work -- particularly acquisitions of companies that are "troubled".

Regarding whether it would be good for employees or not. There are developers at CA under 30 years of age who make $200K a year. There is no salary structure (at least there wasn't a year or two ago when I last looked). I'll admit -- if I was an infrastructure person or a middle manager or someone not good at my job -- I wouldn't want to see CA come in -- but if you do your job well from what I can tell you're apt to be happier.

A book was written on CA called "20th Century Management" (sorry, don't have author or ISBN). It's a little over the top -- but it's worth reading if you want to understand the company.

It makes sense for a company like Computer Associates to pick up Novell and cross sell its Unicenter, perhaps, and other products. It gets its foot in the door this way. Why it would want to, I don't know, but it could be a possibility. But this would be very bad for Novell's employees. CA is notorious for firing people like crazy after a takeover. I know when they picked up ASK, Oracle sent over a van near the company site to interview people.
