Yes, the vested interest in not letting others hear what someone disruptive has to say is to maintain order. Your idea of everyone putting him on ignore is great except that it never works. Never. People on the internet may ALL agree that someone is out of line but --perhaps because of their anonymity--they won't ALL ignore him/her. They will feel free to argue adnauseum with folks they disagree with. It just doesn't work if your goal is something other than having a thread with a lot of back and forth arguing and very little helpful content. We've all heard the saying about one bad apple--it is true on the internet because all the other 'apples' just can't control themselves..
