After talking to people who actually play them, I concluded that buying virtual stuff is simply another form of entertainment, a diversion from whatever it is they do to make a living. When viewed in that context, playing an online game is not much different than downloading music or movies. It's easier to accept the idea of someone shelling out a few bucks for a condo in "CityVille" when you compare it to spending $5 to download a movie, $10 or more to see a movie in a theater -- or $100 or more see your favorite band perform in concert.

I was at a dinner party two weeks ago with ten other people ranging in age from 17 to 66. None of them are what I would call technologically savvy, yet they spent at least an hour talking about their new iPhones, iPads and their recently acquired obsession with playing "Words with Friends" on their newly acquired devices. It was a bit of an "Eureka" moment for me. While I have followed the online gaming space fairly closely over the years, I had not realized that it had become so mainstream.
