Mark, Depends on the chip.. it may not shorten the life of the chip at all.. it depends on how much excess heat is being generated.. I really don't know (because I haven't measured).. there is math to figure it out, but my logic is if you are planning on using the chip for less than 2 years, you probably won't see it die..
