A couple of things:

1) 1964 civl rights act lost the conservative dems in the south. Republcians played on that oen big time.

2) yelling tax cuts was a super duper winning strategy. Dems tried to talk about raising taxes and always lost when they did. Dems have wanted to rasie taxes and a .50 gas tax for 50 years.

3) People vote their culture not what is logical (book, what is wrong with Kansas), so they vote for conservatives even when they hold liberal ideas.
Republican's know this and play on it.

4) Negative campaigning. Liberals hate to do that stuff.
