This is sick. And this comment tells the story:

No one wants to hate on firefighters. But REALLY? Are these people trained on the level of of engineers, various medical personnel, software developers, accountants, tax specialists, etc.? And that's at 90k.

And about that overtime. We're not talking about overtime fighting a fire here. A friend & former client was a manager at a Central Dallas fire station. One year they had EXACTLY ONE call for a fire. The rest were freaking auto accidents where a firetruck just has to show up as a matter of practice. I'm not putting them down in any way; they do an important job.

But at a time when 16% of the country is unemployed, I cannot imagine that there wouldn't be lines a mile long to take one of these jobs at half the money.
