IBM will use synchrotrons as its X-ray source. JMAR is developing a "point source" X-ray system, currently in the process of scaling up power and to be demoed sometime soon. Synchrotrons are not new -- they have been in use a number of years on a developmental basis. They are huge, expensive (about $25 mil.) pieces of equipment capable of serving 18-20 steppers for high-quantity production of chips. Point source serves one stepper and is much less expensive (around $9 mil for the source plus stepper).

Mitsubishi is another company involved in X-ray.
