WASHINGTON, July 12 (UPI) -- Americans are unsure of what the political label "progressive" actually means, and whether it does or does not describe their own views, a poll indicates.

Large parts of America's liberal-moderate-conservative public are unsure what the term means, although liberals are more likely to embrace than reject the label by a margin of 26 percent to 17 percent, while conservatives are more likely to reject than embrace it, 48 percent to 7 percent, a USA Today/Gallup poll released Monday says.

Many high-profile politicians and political groups have begun using "progressive" as a substitute for "liberal" to avoid being pigeonholed, Gallup said.

Forty-five percent of Americans who identify with the progressive label separately describe their political views as either very liberal or liberal, the poll showed.

However, a third of progressives call themselves moderate and nearly a quarter define themselves as conservative, showing Americans' definitions of the term vary widely, the poll indicated.

The telephone poll was conducted June 11-13 with a random sample of 1,014 adults, with a maximum margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, Gallup said.
