hal: >> Yes, I believe the Bell Atlantic contract is exclusive...to DSC. <<

The contract went to a combined DSC/Westell partnership. Westell is building their technology into the Litespan unit. Bell Atlantic is using the Westell remote units, I don't see DSC's name on those, but I do see Westell's technology in the DSC DLC system. Westell has been working with Bell Atlantic for a number of years now. Westell is also integrating their technology into the Lucent platform. DSC and Lucent are systems integrators, integrating Westell technology into an exist platform. The term of subcontractor is somewhat off base.

>> That was my definition for a long time...still a year away at best for consumer priced mass rollouts. <<

Mass rollout is one of those lovely terms that really doesn't mean much. Would you like to define a quantity? The BA contract is for 4 years, do you think mass deployments will occur before 2002 in the BA region? The GTE CLEC division is for a multi-year contact. More than one year less than 1,000,000 years.

>> Lots of other companies have CAP based solutions. CLECs won't have to choose WSTLs just because they want to deploy in BAs region(IMHO). <<

Which vendor will interoperate with a DSC/Westell DLC CAP system? Will Westell work with a COMS type of company for interoperability? I haven't seen it announced yet... have you?

telechoice.com

... Bell Atlantic did note that as the standards get set in the CAP arena, it is possible that consumers might buy their own modems to plug into the Westell/DSC central office/DLC solution. However, TeleChoice believes this is not likely to happen much in the next few years, if at all within the four year contract period, due to the lack of depth of most standards in the DSL arena...

CAP interoperability doesn't include the networking layer.... until later.
