Using TC2000 Data with Parity

Here's how I use Parity with my TC2000 data.
1) First, make sure you can locate where your TC2000 is on your
hard drive. If you have the Pro version, while most of the data is
kept on the CDRom, you will still have data on the hard drive.
It is this data that Parity can access. This means that you will need
to set the amount of historical data you want stored on the hard
drive appropriately. (ie, the default amount is only for 2 years.
That means Parity will only show you 2 years of data, even though
you have up to 10(?) years of data on each stock on the CDRom. To
use this data with Parity, you need to set the number of years in the
"Setup" menu of the Data Manager to whatever you want...probably at
least 5 years, but remember this setting applies to all active stocks.
[remember to choose "Reconstruct TCPro" in the File...Maintenance" menu
after resetting this number! yes, this could take a long time!]
Which brings up the second main thing to remember: Parity will
only be able to access stocks that are active. So to see the stock in
Parity, make it active in the Data manager first.
Ok, so back to the original point, you should make sure you know where
the data is. It most probably is in the directory called:
c:\TC2000\DATA
There will be a directory for each letter of the alphabet. Inside
each letter will be the data for all stocks for that letter. So, if you have
the stock RECY active, you will have the file:
C:\TC2000\DATA\R\RECY.NDX
If you have trouble finding your data, do a search in Windows
for RECY.NDX or if you don't follow that stock (tsk tsk!) choose
another.
2) Ok, now you know the path to your TC2000 data.
Start up Parity.
3) Go to the "Groups" menu and choose "Load a security"
4) For File Format, choose "Telechart 2000 files".
5) Now for the confusing search. On the right, you see a directory
listing box. it probably says c:\parity. Basically, you want to find
the path to the stock data you found above, namely,
c:\tc2000\data\rDouble click on the '..' in the directory listing to move up one
directory. Do this until you are at the top (C:\). Then find your
TC2000 directory. Double click on it.
Double click on the DATA directory. You will now see all the letters
in the alphabet. Double click on 'R'. you will now see a bunch of
.NDX files. Double click on the stock symbol you want to examine.
6) A new dialog box will pop up letting you change how much data you
want to load. By default all data will be loaded. For now just
Click ok to continue.
7) You should now see a plot of your TC2000 data in parity. Now you
can create/load studies, etc.
8) TO MAKE THINGS A LOT EASIER:
The best way to use Parity with TC2000 I think is to create groups
of your stocks that you want to follow in parity. You can add and
remove stocks from a group in the Groups menu, and then from then on,
just load the group and you will be able to flip through all the stocks
quickly without having to go through all the steps above. When you
update the TC2000 data, it will be recognized in parity too (provided
you start parity after you did the update!)
Here's how to create a group of stocks:
1) Choose "Groups"...."Create/Modify Group" from the menu.
2) Type in a name for a group. Choose the TC2000 data format in the
file format. Navigate to your TC2000/DATA directory in the directory
listing box.
3) Double click on all the stocks you want to follow. You can add
pretty much as many as you like. They will appear in the list in the
middle. To remove a stock from the list, double click on it.
You can also click on "Add All" to say, add all the stocks under the
"A" directory. This way, you might create a group for each letter
of the alphabet. The only time you have to add more stocks to the
group is when you activate more stocks in TC2000. Otherwise, all
your stocks will be available to you in Parity!
The interface in Parity is a little clunky to save and edit groups.
There is a pretty good help section though to guide you through it.
This guide is just meant to let you actually access the TC2000 data--
if you have Parity questions, try the Help menu first. Of course,
if you can't figure something out, post here and I'll try to help, or
someone more expert in Parity (hmmmm, wonder who that might be?)
will be sure to help!
