Don't know if anyone answered you, and I'm hardly qualified, but to the best of my knowledge, AC-3 refers to the decoder for dolby digital sound. Dolby digital has a "5.1" output, which means it drives 5 speakers (2 front, 2 rear, and one center) plus a subwoofer. Here's my posts on the Samsung player: exchange2000.com exchange2000.com
