Moore's law is about densities doubling i.e. compute power, not costs of the product to consumers.

I know "Moore's Law". I was implicitly referencing the corollary of getting a doubling of computing power after 18 months for the same cost. I referenced it not because it's a perfect comparison but because I was looking for a well-known phenomenon with the same price/performance dynamics during the past years. The response I am getting here on this forum shows that US citizens still underestimate the usefulness of photovoltaics and are not aware of the improvements during recent years. The cost of photovoltaic modules has gone down from about EUR 7000 / kW_p to below EUR 2000 / kW_p within the last five years.

Solar is all about the cheapest manufacturing cost as possible and of course the Sun provides only so much energy per square foot no matter how efficient the collector.

Yes - and manufacturers are far from having reached end of reducing manufacturing costs and the efficiencies in solar energy conversion still go up.
