"Are they mistaken about the consequences or their political strength or both? Or do they understand and not care? Maybe they just aren't interested in governance. Maybe they just want to let off steam by blowing things up. Do you have a sense of this?"

Hard to say and I'm sure it varies. I think a lot of them overestimate their political strength. I'm GOP chairman for my state House district and posted something critical of the Tea Party hardliners in Congress on facebook yesterday. A Tea Party activist from my district chimed in to say I owed my election to Tea Partiers who she said tripled the turnout at this year's district caucus (they didn't) and how dare I criticize them. She said they represent "the heart of America" on the debt ceiling issue, but as anyone who can read polls knows, they don't.

I agree with many of their policy goals (smaller government, lower spending, balanced budget, etc.), but I'm very uncomfortable with their populist fervor. Where I am a conservative with a classical liberal bent (or maybe the other way around), many of them look to me more like revolutionaries, determined to cripple the federal government to (they hope) bring about their vision of utopia.

I don't like populists, demagogues, revolutionaries, or utopians - left or right.
