Bobby,

How carefully did you read the announcement in question?
The Rockwell technology Diamond plans to incorporate
into its next generation of modems has not even been
submitted to world standardization bodies as yet. Rockwell
will not demonstrate the 56k technology to the general public
until November.

Even if the technology functions as promised, one
serious limitation is that a digital connection between
two modems incorporating the Rockwell chipset will be
required to achieve the "higher speeds" you reference.
Regular telephone lines will be limited to the same 33.6k
baud rate presently imposed upon v.34 modems. Based on
documentation I've read from Rockwell, the new chipset
essentially acts as a weaker cousin of the various ISDN
devices presently available.

Diamond does not have exclusive access to the coming
Rockwell chipset. As in the past, Supra will be only one
of a great many modem manufacturers to take advantage
of the latest developments from Rockwell International.
The new chipset certainly represents a potential bonanza
for Rockwell, however.
