Like with Malthus, it is less obvious that Ludd was wrong than that he may have been way ahead of his time. The belief in endless progress and infinite human inventiveness which will eternally keep saving us - is partly a religion, and an extrapolation.

We have been living through a Luddite experiment already for the past couple of decades. Instead of super-efficient machinery we had millions of inexpensive Chinese workers. The result? We've been living on a borrowed dime, prices of many manufactured goods are down, costs of food and raw materials are up. Jobs are down, and not coming back. We may be sliding into a depression.

So far, there is no sign of any big new ideas and technologies that would keep us all employed, making money and things - and make us competitive.

The notion that there is no shortage of work is cute, but if we start hiring each other at super low wages that would simply mean that we are heading towards poverty.
