Listened to something interesting about miners the other day. When they went up in the 80s, inflation was propelling gold. Today it is up due to risk issues, thus it is more of a safety trade. Investors seeking security don't really care about miners as much as wealth preservers, thus the lag. Don't necessarily endorse this view but it might be correct.
