If renters got the deduction they'd rent more expensive units just as home buyers do...landlords would get more revenue, builders would be more expensive units and also get more revenue. When that revenue is taxed the gov gets more revenue... If mortgage interested deductions were eliminated, houses would be cheaper, and banks, realtors, builders would make less money....ie it would kill the housing market.
