Travesty might be too strong, esp. once you've already accepted the income tax in the first place, but it would be negative, a net loss for the country. Government is already too big, we need to reign it in not inflate it more. And even in terms of budget balances, increasing rates on those paying the highest rates, is likely to be relatively unproductive, at best, possibly even reducing revenue, if for example it helps push us in to a double dip recession.
