>> The military is the wrong hammer for that nail. It was designed to battle other country's militaries. The intelligence services, some drones, and some Seal teams are all it takes.
It is really, really easy to sit here, 10 years later, and say coulda, woulda, shoulda. We heard this nitwit Obama criticize the previous administration for its actions, and he rode it straight into the White House. Then, he quickly saw just how difficult things were.
You can't just "close GITMO". You can't just withdraw troops from Iraq -- Iraq has suffered from Obama's inattention, and the situation is worsening there as a result of it. You can't just pull troops out of Afghanistan without giving up ground. And in fact, according to a recent poll of 4,000 Arabs over six nations, and Obama's favorability today is less than Bush's was in 2008.
The point being that this is all easy from your comfy recliner, but in real life these are difficult things to do; Obama found out the hard way that talk is cheap. When 9/11 happened we had a different military than the one we have today; but the American people absolutely would NOT have stood for inaction: by a very wide margin, they believed another attack was likely after what they had witnessed on 9/11. And every relevant intelligence agency did, as well. As did practically every acknowledged expert on the subject.
It is really a cheap shot to stand back now and say, "Oh, hell yes, there is nothing to it." That's bullshit. |
