The battery has been broken down and the costs of the components tallied and it comes to around $10K. The rest of the car is pretty standard fare. So I'm pretty sure they are making a profit at these prices.

Battery costs are dropping rapidly along with improved capacity and life. Current Tesla Roadster customers are being offered a spare battery pack for around $12,000 now. That's significantly cheaper than what was originally put in the car when production began three years ago. And that's a 54 Kwhr pack, much greater capacity than the Leaf.
