8/5/11 Contest Update
Apparently, the shady crew that raised the debt ceiling were lousy engineers. And the compromised ceiling quickly collapsed on the heads of investors, leaving many senseless. Now if only they had listened to the Tea Party experts and left the ceiling alone, stocks would have gone through the roof. ;-)
Gored by Dendreon, biotech stocks were especially wounded. And at Friday’s close, the Nasdaq Biotech Index was down -3.13% YTD (vs. up 11.38% YTD a week ago) and the Contest median was down -8.30% YTD (vs. up 10.44% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index was down -4.54% YTD (vs. up 3.90% YTD a week ago).
A large position in ICGN, steadied by Pfizer’s buyout price, limited losses for GENE’s portfolio (up 46.93 % YTD), which remained in the lead. MCBIO’s portfolio (up 33.16% YTD) held on to second place while, just a smidgen behind, JIBAC’s portflio (up 33.11% YTD) moved into third place.
At Friday's close, a mere 12 (vs. 29 last week) of the 38 Contest portfolios were in the black, while 15 of the 38 were beating the NBI.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the week (foreign stock prices are not converted to US$ in these two tables).
Portfolio adjustments: None
It’s only money, so relax and enjoy the weekend biotechies!
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
