it's a good and interesting thought and idea, but i think the idea of drilling just about anywhere in ca would bring out protesters paranoid that more oil might be discovered there. :-)

seriously the idea has quality imo. however some of the faults in ca have gone so long without a big earthquake that setting off small explosions laterally or vertically would raise fears of setting off a really big one that could put la in the ocean. i have seen some earthquake show on the history channel a few years ago that were just incredible for a big fault just south of los angeles. parts of this thing have moved like 30 or 50 feet in the last (20, 50, 100 years? i don't recall the exact number of years) many years, and other parts of the fault have not moved at all in that same time frame. they showed the contrast with some airplane/helicopter video showing where a T in a road is now compared to where it was many years ago. it was amazing to me.
