I think that governors of states shouldn't be leading prayer meetings, myself. That has nothing to do with my feelings about public prayer, and everything to do with the fact that he's a governor, and everything to do with the establishment clause of the First Amendment. It's difficult to separate the political from the religious in such a case.

To me, this is not any kind of sign of people wanting to stop others from freely practicing their religions. Stadium meetings are not essential to the practice of Christianity. Note that stadium rallies in general are fine with me, as long as they aren't hosted by an acting state governor.

I happen to believe that Perry probably conceived of this idea partly as a way to generate a political backlash, which would then help him to advance the idea that Christians are being persecuted in the US today. That in turn plays into his Presidential ambitions.
