I have two thermarest pads. One full length 1" thick and one 3/4 length 1.5" length.

With my new sleeping bag...a Big Agnes Encampment, I need to have a pad at all times. Big Agnes makes bags that have no fill on the bottom. Instead, they have an envelope on the bottom where you insert the pad. Well....the 1" pad isn't thick enough that I don't press through with my hip (I am a side sleeper). And the 3/4 length isn't long enough that my feet don't get cold.

So, last week....I got my bday present from my Mom...an Exped Synmat inflatable pad. Works great. Full length, I don't press through when I am on my side and weighs 12oz less than my other pads.

JXN will do day hikes only. And he gets bored on switchbacks. So he wants something that has a little climbing. Class 3 instead of Class 1. I am getting to that point too.

But the other thing is that he has inherited his mother's 4 Star gene. He likes to sleep in a comfortable bed and even more importantly, the idea of doing his business in the great outdoors does not appeal to him.

Maybe when he is older.....
