I don't see the contradiction.

Obama was elected on a platform that included health care reform. Instead of taking the initiative and putting forth a plan that met his campaign rhetoric, and anticipated the objections of the special interest groups, he essentially let them take center stage to define the debate. They screwed around with it to the point where the public was sick of the noise and Democrats didn't want to vote for this monstrosity. Remember the poll where something like 70% of the respondents said it was a bad bill - but but 70% liked the various individual provisions like coverage to age 26 and no denial based on pre-existing conditions? There is a consensus to fix health care, but the message isn't getting to Congress over the special interest noise, to Democrats or Republicans.

There is a popular consensus for a balanced approach to deficit reduction, but the Tea Party held the Republican party hostage to a no tax increase pledge - and the Republicans are scared s**tless that Rush Limbaugh will speak ill of them on his yak show.

Richard Nixon once referred to the "Silent Majority". That majority is being screwed by a President and Congress who pay more attention to the loud elements of the right than to the Silent Majority, which wants common sense solutions to problems.

We didn't look like a partisan and divided country when we elected the first person of color, with a Muslim sounding name yet, as President. To the contrary, we were the envy of the world that it could actually happen.
