I grew up on the Isle of Wight. Total freedom from about aged eight. During the school holidays I would leave home and disappear for weeks, even months, had a small boat and an ocean to wander about in. Occasionally I would phone back home, but only if I had money to waste which was a rare occasion indeed. My parents didn't worry as it it was a safe place apart from the sea, which is in fact very dangerous to small kids, but I didn't let on. Living in a city would have driven me nuts.

I find it very difficult to understand or talk to many parents of children. It's like they have forgotten who they were at that age entirely. I just hope my kids never forget what children are like, and have some respect for them.
