>>A mistake in this adjustment can easily send the company packing. Msft is taking a great pain right now on the internet front simply because they missed internet trend for six months. If they had started their internet push six months earlier, they would not have to give so much good stuffs free. <<

I disagree with this entirely. IMHO This business isn't really about genious founders coming up with bright strategic ideas. It's about execution. No (well, almost no) other company executes as well as Microsoft does. Netscape comes damn close and that's why I think they're succeeding.

Microsoft has been late to a game before so many times. I don't really want to get into this discussion again since it's been brought up so many times here and in other threads, but... Microsoft has always had better execution and (in the end) better technology.

As far as giving stuff away... Microsoft pumps $100+ million a year into strategic research alone. It doesn't pay off immediately, so what? Let's try to make a guesstimate of how much their internet division costs them: 2500 people * 100K a year = $250 million a year. However some products are actually delivering revenue. Given that their bottom line is $2+ bln. a year it really sounds like a fairly decent investment to me (protecting and improving their Windows/Office franchises itself is worth it).
