I wasn't actually arguing the usefulness of traders as much as pointing out that most people have an inner requirement/need to build something. Therefore, the lack of that (other than building a larger net worth;^)), may be a significant factor in the dropout rate of full time traders. Not all of it is lack of capital. I think some of it is lack of drive after a fashion.

I still work as a full time engineer and don't intend to give up the technical work in the near term. I am shifting my hours to allow more access to the markets during trading hours and am considering a few options other than my current position to free up the full day.

But I enjoy designing things that get used and can't help but feel that most others are the same.

However, that said, trading (mostly position, some day) provides the majority of my income.
