Grommit brings a really good point, which leads me to the following thought - if the market goes down hypothetically 50%, I would need a 100% return on the way back to make up the loss or that's a 100% of make-whole movement instead of pure profit. My experience of March 2009 was that I was fully invested 2 months prior to the bottom and had nothing to bet with - there are two losses in my mind: capital loss and opportunity loss. I don't know know how to prevent either, but some cash helps me minimize the latter.
