Kids can be criminals as well. Esp. for a broad definition of kid that you seem to be using, including teenagers.

Kids become criminals because the adults in their lives have screwed up and there is no one to pick up the slack. In a time of austerity, there is no slack.

They are getting screwed and they know it

They don't like the police, and are upset that the cops shot someone. They mostly don't have a complex political understanding, most of them know little or nothing about the political arguments over the budget.

(and if they did have a sophisticated political and economic understanding they could see that the size of the government had become a serious problem)

Tim, what they do know is that they don't have hope for a better future. Last fall, students/teenagers were protesting because Cameron raised university tuitions across the board and cut off financial aid. Its always the lower classes that suffer the most from the asterity budgets of conservatives. Why? Because the lower classes are not part of the conservatives' constituency.

So then when people don't have hope, they become desperate. These kids may not know why they don't have any hope but they know its their reality and future. And when you have no hope of a better life, then bad consequences have less meaning. Indirectly, Cameron and his ridiculous budget is causing the development of more criminals in the UK.

And the irony, the UK's fiscal problems are not that bad.......certainly much better than the PIIGS of Europe.
