Mark - Re: PCs vs. NC"

Let me add another reason why the NC might not be such a good idea. It is a very simple one. Perhaps it is just a re-phrasing of yours and other's thoughts.

The widespread adoption of PCs gave each PC owner desktop power and convenience, controlled by himself. Prior to that, computing power was totally controlled by IS departments as they limited access to THE MAINFRAME.

Quite simply, the success of the ubiquitous PC is itself the fundamental reason why the NC, controlled by THE CENTRAL PLANNING DEPARTMENT, will not succeed.

PC = PERSONAL COMPUTING (Emphasis on PERSONAL)

One question that I have not seen addressed regarding the NC with the "SERVER" holding all the data files for individual users - who polices the MIS department to make sure that the files of an individual are not made available to anyone who demands access to these files?

This situation would apply when, as you called them - the "jack booted thugs", decide that employee X has a bad attitude. Perhaps WE should review his computer files - to make sure he is not writing bad thoughts as well as thinking them?

In other words - who will police the police in a police state?
